In the midst of this Wagner year, bringing Théodore Gouvy back into vogue means recalling that at the end of the 19th century, Wagnerism was not the only “German” style to pervade Europe. The spirit of Mendelssohn and Schumann was represented by Brahms, but not only. Gouvy was also their ambassador, inspired by a conviction and an artistic honesty that emerge in all his works. A more general look at the context of cultural exchanges between France and Germany at the end of the 19th century will allow you to listen to famous or rare scores by Schubert, Brahms, Wolf and Reger, in counterpoint to the works of Gouvy.
