'Félicien David, from Paris to Cairo' is the new Festival at Palazzetto Bru-Zane in venice

The Palazzetto Bru-Zane dedicates a Festival to the French composer Félicien David with concerts, conferences and events for families.

Félicien David is one of those composers remained famous (in the eyes of the specialists) for an opera... that has never been represented. David is a man of 'The Desert ', the ode-symphony that started - as they say - the fashion of Orientalism in music, exactly in 1844, the year of his first triumph at the Théâtre - Italien de Paris. The opinion is reductive for two reasons: first of all, because it does not take into account many other operas that, since the end of the eighteenth century, had revived a taste for the picturesque of the French audience (from 'Les Indes galantes' by Rameau, to 'La Caravane du Caire' by Grétry, until 'Les Bayadères' by Catel). Secondly, because David, far from being relegated to mere talent for the local colour, has left other operas of great musical interest. The composer must thank in particular to the opéra-comique 'Lalla-Roukh' (1862) a success that he himself did not believe it would be possible. This work begins the renewal of French opera, that gives up the success of Meyerbeer to open to a meditative and poetic lyricism. 'Faust' by Gounod and 'Les Pêcheurs de perles' by Bizet are sharers in this same creative impulse. As for the rest, David distributes his roles to high tenors and lighter sopranos, more suitable for him to paint the subtle nuances of melancholy and despair.
