On Friday, April 18 at 9:00 PM, VCR Classica+ presents, as per tradition on Good Friday, Johann Sebastian Bach’s St John Passion BWV 245 - a cornerstone of the Baroque sacred repertoire. Composed in 1724 for the Good Friday liturgy at the Nikolaikirche in Leipzig, the Johannes-Passion BWV 245 recounts the final moments of Christ’s life according to the Gospel of John, weaving together arias, recitatives and chorales with extraordinary expressive power.
The version proposed by VCR Classica+ is the historic recording conducted by John Eliot Gardiner with the English Baroque Soloists and the Monteverdi Choir. The role of the Evangelist is sung by tenor Anthony Rolfe Johnson; Stephen Varcoe performs the part of Jesus, while Cornelius Hauptmann sings the role of Pilate and the bass arias. The broadcast will be introduced by Gabriele Formenti.
